What are Self-Ligating Braces?

white-arc-bottom

At Innovative Orthodontic Centers, we only use self-ligating braces. Unlike conventional braces, self-ligating braces do not use elastics or metal ties, known as ligatures, to secure the archwires to the brackets. Instead, they rely on free-sliding technology where special clips or doors help the archwires move your teeth into place.

Conventional Braces

1

The ties used with conventional braces cause friction and slow down tooth movement, which can lead to lengthier treatment times.
2

Conventional braces trap plaque and food around the elastics or wires, making oral hygiene more challenging.
3

The pressure, friction and need for tightening can cause discomfort.
4

Traditional braces limit how much movement teeth can express and this can lead to the need for the extraction of permanent teeth.
5

Because of the larger brackets and ligatures, conventional braces are more noticeable.
6

Appointments are longer and more frequent because the orthodontist has to tighten the wires.

Self-Ligating Braces

1

Thanks to the precision and mechanics of self-ligating braces, especially when paired with our SureSmile® prescription wires, the teeth move more quickly into place and treatment times are shorter.
2

Oral hygiene is a breeze because there are no ligatures to trap food and plaque.
3

Self-ligating braces minimize the friction and pressure on teeth and don’t require tightening, so they’re much more comfortable.
4

The lack of friction and ease of movement also means we rarely have to extract permanent teeth when using self-ligating braces.
5

Self-ligating braces are lower profile and a more aesthetic option.
6

You have fewer appointments and office visits are quicker because the orthodontist simply has to open and close the door on the braces. There’s no tightening involved!
