Sometimes, when a little one has certain orthodontic issues, we recommend early interceptive treatment before their permanent teeth are all in. This lets us guide the development of their teeth and jaws for optimal results and helps avoid more extensive treatment later. Traditionally, the only choices for this early treatment, known as Phase 1 treatment, were braces or various appliances. Well, not any more! At Innovative Orthodontic Centers, we’re proud to have been one of the first practices in North America to adopt Invisalign® First, a system of cutting-edge, clear aligners designed for growing patients who still have primary teeth. Dr. Ibrahim, Dr. Gin and our team offer Invisalign for young patients in Naperville and Shorewood and we’ve been achieving fantastic results, quickly and comfortably.
Phase 1 Orthodontic Treatment
It’s recommended that the first orthodontic evaluation occur by age seven. While it’s often just an observational period until the patient is ready for treatment in their teenage years, in some cases, if Dr. Ibrahim or Dr. Gin see red flags, Phase 1 treatment will be indicated. In Phase 1, young patients wear Invisalign® First, braces or another appliance to achieve certain goals like making space for permanent teeth, helping the lips meet correctly, ensuring the jaw grows in the proper direction or preventing a bad bite. This can save a lot of time and expense down the road and ward off the need for surgery or extractions.
We typically finish Phase 1 treatment in 12 months or less. Then, the patient wears a retainer to hold the adult teeth in their new positions, followed by a little break where we monitor them and let the baby teeth fall out naturally. When their permanent teeth are in, they start Phase 2 treatment, which is a standard course of Invisalign Teen or braces.
The Benefits of Invisalign® First
As Diamond+ Invisalign® Providers, we have serious expertise in treating little smiles with clear aligners. Dr. Ibrahim has even been involved in Invisalign clinical trials, advisory boards and pilot programs and has been asked for her advice on how to perfect products by Align Technology, the makers of Invisalign. We’ve offered Invisalign to growing patients for quite some time and Invisalign® First helps us in our mission to give patients of all ages convenient, comfortable, precise treatment options.
Invisalign® First aligners are a proven way to address the problems we aim to fix with early interceptive orthodontics. They’re crafted especially to accommodate mixed dentition (having primary teeth and permanent teeth) and a growing patient’s smaller, shorter teeth. There’s room for the permanent teeth teeth to make their appearance and SmartForce® and SmartStage® technology allow for more predictable tooth movements, while also letting us support arch development. This all adds up to achieving our Phase 1 treatment goals safely and quickly.
