An Easier, More Comfortable Alternative to Fixed Expanders

Innovative Orthodontic Centers is proud to be among the first orthodontists in North America to offer the Invisalign Palatal Expander system for growing patients. The system consists of 3D-printed, removable expanders that widen a child or teen’s upper jaw (maxilla), correcting skeletal discrepancies and bite imbalances. The revolutionary device is a more comfortable, easier-to-use alternative to metal expanders that are bonded in place and require manually turning a screw every day

How Does the Invisalign Palatal Expander System Work?

A narrow maxilla (upper jaw, dental arch, palate) can lead to crowding, bite problems, unwanted changes in the facial structure and even airway issues. In kids with a mixture of primary and permanent teeth (mixed dentition), phase 1 orthodontic treatment with a palatal expander can be used to widen the jaw. This skeletal correction makes room for the permanent teeth to erupt properly and creates the ideal relationship between the upper and lower arches.

Our board-certified orthodontists and Diamond+ Top 1% Invisalign Providers can now do this with Invisalign Palatal Expanders. Dr. Manal Ibrahim and Dr. Christine Gin use digital treatment planning to design custom expanders on a 3D model of the patient’s mouth. The removable, BPA-free plastic devices are then 3D printed in a series staged in small increments of movement. The child simply changes the expander daily and with each new device, the maxilla expands bit by bit (no turning or screw needed!).

Once the prescribed amount of expansion has been reached, the child wears the appliance for several months to hold the maxilla in place while new bone forms in the center, stabilizing the expansion. When it’s time for Phase 2 in the teen years, treatment will be faster, easier and more effective.

What are the Benefits of the Invisalign Palate Expander?

Together with Invisalign First™ aligners, Invisalign Palatal Expanders give our experts a full, metal-free early intervention treatment solution, including skeletal (orthopedic) and dental (orthodontic) arch expansion. There are a number of benefits of Invisalign Palatal Expanders vs. traditional metal expanders, including:

Easier to Use

A conventional palatal expander sits against the roof of the mouth and has a screw in its center. A key has to be inserted into the screw to activate expansion daily. Invisalign Palatal Expanders don’t have a screw to turn. Kids simply change to a new expander each day and the device takes care of the rest.

Convenient

Invisalign Palatal Expanders are removable, so there are zero food restrictions, and there are no breakable parts, which means no repair appointments.

Comfortable

The palatal expanders are designed according to each patient’s unique anatomy for a perfect fit and superior comfort. Eliminating daily screw turning also helps in the comfort department.

Better oral hygiene

Kids take the expanders out before brushing and flossing, so oral hygiene is simple. Plus there are no metal parts that can trap food and plaque.

Effective and safe

The Invisalign Palatal Expander system is FDA approved, clinically effective and safe. As the #1 orthodontist Invisalign provider in Illinois, we have unsurpassed case experience, ensuring we can achieve exceptional results in kids and teens with the system.
