Problems to Watch for in Seven-Year-Olds

Though the American Association of Orthodontists recommends kids see an orthodontist for evaluation at age seven, they don’t advocate comprehensive care for all young patients. Every child should get a baseline exam at this age to make sure they don’t have any problems or risk factors that could affect their future development. If everything looks good, they’ll simply enter our complimentary growth and development program where we’ll continue check-ups – much like how kiddos have regular hearing or vision exams! Then, when they’re a teen, we can assess their need for future orthodontic treatment. However, there are certain types of malocclusions (bad bites) or issues where early diagnosis and interceptive treatment could be extremely beneficial, such as those pictured below.

Keeping an Eye on Little Smiles

At Innovative Orthodontic Centers, we offer complimentary consultations. Our goal is to provide your child with the most appropriate treatment at the right time. In order to receive care at the ideal time, it’s important to have your child assessed by an orthodontist like Dr. Ibrahim or Dr. Gin at the first sign of an orthodontic problem or no later than age seven.

That’s because by this age:
  • The first molars have erupted, establishing the back bite. We’re able to evaluate the front-to-back and side-to-side relationships of the bite to discover functional shifts or crossbites.
  • The incisors have started coming in, letting us detect problems like crowding, open bites, deep bites, bad oral habits and some jaw discrepancies.
  • For some patients, early evaluation will lead to significant treatment benefits. For others, parents can simply gain peace of mind.
